In detail

About Amanita pantherina

Amanita pantherina, the panther cap, is a European Amanita with a brown to olive-brown cap, 5–12 cm across, scattered with small pure-white warts that often form neat concentric rings — the “panther” pattern. Gills and stem are white, the stem has a smooth ring, and the base sits in a rounded bulb with a distinct rolled rim, like the edge of a sock. That rim is the clearest way to tell it from the fly agaric.

It grows in both broadleaf and coniferous woods, often near beech, oak and pine, and fruits from late summer to autumn. Like all Amanitas it is mycorrhizal and only available from wild collection. In the Baltic region the panther cap is far less common than the fly agaric, which is why volumes and pack sizes are smaller.

Why unopened caps

Unopened caps are young fruit bodies picked before the cap flattens. They are compact, round and even in size, keep their colour well after drying and still show the white warts clearly. That makes them the top selection for display and for anyone who judges quality by eye. Because only a small share of each harvest is collected at this stage, unopened caps are the most limited grade.

From the forest to your parcel

  1. Wild collection in Lithuanian and Latvian forests during the season.
  2. Cleaning — forest debris is removed.
  3. Drying — until the material is dry and stable for storage.
  4. Sorting by grade and format.
  5. Packing in sealed bags labelled with species and weight.

How to store it

Dried mushrooms keep best in a closed bag or glass jar, in a cool, dry and dark place. Moisture is the main risk: if the material ever feels soft or damp, it has absorbed humidity. Keep the pack out of reach of children and pets and away from food.
